Rob Britton: “Volta a Portugal is actually considered by a lot of people as a fourth Grand Tour”
Canadian rider, 36 years old, from Rally Cycling. He debuted in the Volta a Portugal in 2020 and will repeat participation this year.
– Before racing Volta a Portugal, had you ever heard about the race?
Yes, the Volta a Portugal is actually considered by a lot of people as a “fourth Grand Tour“!
– Was there anything in Volta that impressed you or that you retain until today?
The climb from Covilhã [Torre] was incredible last year. We started at 30ºC and finished in the clouds at maybe 6ºC.
– Are there any international races that you can compare to Volta?
The only other race I can think of and might be worthy is San Juan (Argentine), and that’s only because it’s eight days long and also has a rest day, but Volta Portugal is WAY harder!
– What is your opinion on Portuguese cycling and riders, based on your Volta experience?
Racing in Portugal is always very difficult, I think the Portuguese riders have a lot of pride when the international riders come to their country and they show up flying! It’s very impressive to see. That makes our days very hard.
