4. Mattia Cattaneo – chosen by Vasco Serrano
Mattia Cattaneo was, at some point, singled out as one of the great promises of world cycling, after finishing on the podium of the Tour de l’Avenir in 2012. But the transition to World Tour did not go as smoothly and the Italian’s potential seemed lost… until an impressive 2019 season with Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec, which earned him a transfer to Deceuninck-Quick Step the following year. On this Tour, he took advantage of the absence of a pure climber within the Belgian team to shine and even fight for a place in the final top 10. Specialised in time trial and breakways, Cattaneo’s goal would have been achieved had it not been for the minutes he lost on the first week’s hilly stages.
