15 riders we enjoyed in the Tour 2021… besides the obvious

5. Wout Poels – chosen by Joe Laverick

Talking about agressive cycling, one has to feel sorry for Wout Poels. The Dutchman originally came to support Jack Haig but after the Aussie crashed, Bahrain-Victorious’ ambitions changed, and Poels attacked the mountain classification in the final week. He took the mythical Polka-Dot Jersey on Stage 15, in Andorra, and battled heroically to hold onto it on the road to Luz Ardiden. The outcome was to be decided on the final Hors Catégorie climb: if Tadej Pogačar finished outside of the top three of the stage, Poels would win the mountain in the Tour. But Pogačar was Pogačar that day and ruined Poel’s polka-dotted dreams by winning the stage and taking the mountains classification with it. Adding insult to injury, Poels had to wear the jersey for the next three stages, before returning it to Pogačar on the Champs Élysees. But not before having it signed by the champion of the Tour himself, in an iconic moment.
